I don't quite know where to begin and don't want to write a novel, but I'll give it a try. Up front, I'm an active duty service member with a 10-yo son who is on the autism spectrum/high functioning. We've had 4 moves with changes in schools over his 10 years including DoDEA and 3 different states. I mention it as we have seen and experienced quite a bit with a fairly wide variety of schools and services.

In short, I was VERY nervous about this move to the panhandle of FL, even though Google searches gave me reason to have hope based on school rankings. Once I found out I was moving to FL, I immediately jumped on Google and reached out to the Okaloosa and Santa Rosa school districts along with some of the schools. I found Santa Rosa to be much more responsive, engaged, genuinely interested, and focused on learning about my son, his special needs, and progress even though they had not seen him. From engagement on his IEP, to services available within the district, and the services that they were working to provide in the future, Santa Rosa was nothing short of amazing and extremely professional. Once I arrived in the area, I visited schools in Okaloosa and Santa Rosa to consider all options. Again, I found the Santa Rosa School District Special Education office to be nothing short of incredible and amazing in so many ways. They set up a meeting to discuss the district special education program and to also meet the principals and staff at a variety of schools to get a feel for the administration, school environment, and staff. I was blown away by each school and selecting a school has never been more difficult which was a GREAT thing.

In the end, I decided that HNI was the best schooling option for my son and I have not been disappointed. It is not an exaggeration to state that they (his Classroom teacher, Special Education staff and resources, school administration, and leadership of the school Principal) confirm my decision by what they do not only for my son but for all of the children every single day.

My journey started with uncertainty and concern and has turned into an incredible one thanks to the Santa Rosa School District and HNI. I would highly recommend HNI to any parent with elementary school aged children and particularly those with special needs on the autism spectrum.

You can have your kids car rider, bus rider, or they can do the thing where they stay there and play/watch movies until the parents came to pick them up.
