It’s been around two years since I got discharged from Palm shores and even though my time there was short I really did love this place and still think of it with love even as the years have passed. I was admitted back in July 2022, my name is Lorena B. Even though I’m writing this as an adult now I can really say that palm shores genuinely helped me when I was a teenager and I don’t know where I’d be now if I hadn’t gone. At first being there was rough and I hated it but the girls in Atlantis became my family and the staff did as well. I still think about the staff to this day and appreciate everything that every one of those workers, whether it was the nurses or the therapists or the staff or the teachers did for me. I’m a university student now and graduated top percent in my class from High School and I wouldn’t have been able to have done it if I hadn’t gone to Palm shores. Palm Shores was my home and my rock for four months and I’m happy it was Palm Shores and not any other facility.

i was admitted to this facility on 12/3/2024 and discharged AMA 12/12/2024
in my experience here palm shores is NOT a mental health facility, it is more what is similar of a juvenile detention center. i understand there has to be rules put in place in a facility like this, however there are limitations between discipline and staff abusing their power.
personally, i had no issues with getting in trouble but witnessed many others.
there was so many issues between the other children fighting both verbally and physically and in and environment where you are supposed to be able to heal that is just not ideal. the fighting triggered my anxiety and i was unable to get through the program if it was going to continue to be like that the length of my stay.

i did however, in the short time i was there learn a few things that will be helpful to me in my future.
i want to thank ms.lynda , ms.cherise, ms.lori and ms lexi for being there and listening to me for the short time i was there and needed someone to talk to. it just takes one good person to listen to you without judgment in your day to make you feel better and laugh and those were my people.

so even though i did not have the ā€œidealā€ experience i did get some good advice from the techs there, because they were all super kind hearted and wanted to be there to help us and i WOULD recommend this facility to someone if it was their only option to receive help.

Palm Shores BHC was a necessary step in my daughter's path to healing from the early neglect/trauma she suffered at the hands of her birth parents. It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make but thankfully, the best decision for my daughter and for our family.

To all the Techs (shout out to Ms. Mello, Ms. Sophie, Ms. Heidi), Nurses, Dr. Barker and especially Ms. Kinsey, Therapist, please know that you are extraordinary, otherworldly and vital. It’s not reflected in our paycheck or in how you are treated by the patients (and probably some parents), but know this to be true: You change lives. As a mom who entrusted my daughter in your care, I am grateful for you.

To parents considering this option, know that YOU have to do the work to...on yourself, your family and in concert with the PSBHC staff. Trust the process and get involved. It will change many lives.

I was discharged yesterday! My experience at Palm Shores was absolutely phenomenal. I’m not gonna lie, it sucks while you’re in there but as soon as you get out you’ll realize how much it benefits you. Even if it just makes you never want to go to a place like that again, that’s still so good. I lost my father and my nana while I was in there, and they helped me a lot with my grief. They helped me think about my future and what I want to be when I graduate. The kids were so kind to me and the staff were so helpful. I’m not going to lie, most of the therapists suck so try to request Ms. Lindsey or Ms. Kinsey. Thank you Palm Shores!

Shoutouts to everyone who made an impact on my recovery:
Ms. Lindsey (BEST therapist 10/10)
Nurse Karen (Helped me a lot with grief)
Nurse Trish (Was totally honest with me and helped me see if I was in the wrong)
Mr. Seth (Always made me laugh)
Mr. Brandon (Good to process with)
Ms. Melo (Supported me through it all)
Ms. Carrie (Super kind to me)
Mr. Danny (The best incentives)
Ms. Brooke (Always made me laugh)
Mr. David (Always made me laugh)
Ms. Shadee (Always made me laugh)
Ms. Danesha (Always made me laugh)

If you’re looking for programs, please choose this one! The staff actually care and both doctors are genuinely there for you and want to help. The food isn’t bad either… (i’m gonna miss Mr. Casey’s oatmeal)

I was discharged in December of 2023. This was my first and only residential. It was not the greatest experience, but no psychiatric facility is enjoyable. It was incredibly difficult to witness and ignore all of the fights, drama, codes, and restraints. I was traumatized, seeing patients hurt each other not knowing what they might do next. The restraints were one of the worst parts being there- having to hear them scream for the staff members to get off them while they’re crying. The education isn’t the best, you don’t really learn anything except from edgenuity. I barely passed. Most of the staff are incredible and genuinely support you, which is essential for a facility like this. If you are thinking about going here or sending your child here, I would recommend it. It was hell for me, but it made me better mentally because of all the challenges and obstacles I faced. The day I got there I wanted to go home already. My whole stay was just waiting and waiting for it to be my discharge date. My best advice is to focus on YOURSELF and don’t get into drama. It’s a long process but it will feel so good when it’s over.

Intake with the Director of Admissions was very good. The rest of the treatment process was a complete waste of money. My wife and I adopted our daughter in 2017 at age 11 and she was admitted to Palm Shores from 10/24/23-04/09/2024 to receive treatment for trauma from her bio family. She was given 4 out of 5 step phases that it was very obvious she did not earn. Her Doctor and therapist were completely set of trying to keep her scheduled discharge date of March 15th, 2024 although she had just started following rules two weeks prior with 21 infractions for that quarter because this facility just wants to look good far as stats. Only reason her discharge date was extended to 04/11/2024 was due to her mom and I had not had an over night with her due to her losing her overnight privileges 02/2024 because of her behavior. I stressed to her therapist and doctor that she was not ready for discharge based off different conversations she was having with her mom/my wife of wanting to vape and continue drugs and defiantcy during the phone calls. These were the same behaviors she had prior to being admitted. I told the therapist and Doctor via email that she would be engaging in drug activity and be arrested for Domestic Violence within days of being back home. She returned home April 9th, 2024, April 10th, she was enrolled in the academy. The academy is the only school in this county my daughter can attend due to her being expelled from her high school prior to Palm Shores admission. Her first day of school was April 15th 2024, April 18th 2024, she was suspended from the academy school for getting caught two times for vaping nicotine. April 21st she was arrested for Domestic Violence in our home. Definitely a waste of money given to this facility.
