I am a licensed clinical psychologist and trained weekly under Dr. Puentes for 3 months to learn the fundamentals of performance psychology. Since that time, I have used the techniques I learned to work with athletes as well as artists and musicians. It has been a fantastic new direction for my practice, and Dr. Puentes continues to support me through consultation. I highly recommend training under Dr. Puentes to any mental health clinician looking to take a new direction with their clinical work.

Feeling depressed, insecure, and scared, I did not know where to go. I was a bulimic athlete with body image issues and my confidence was largely compromised. I have seen psychologists and psychiatrists for the majority of my life as they have been a big help for my mental well-being, but as a lifelong athlete that still has athletic dreams, I needed to see someone that spoke my language in the context of athletic competition as it relates to mental health. I searched Google and found nothing. I desperately asked publicly for help, and a friend of mine told me that a professional had recently spoke to their class at a college that seemed very promising in the world of sports psychology.

I looked up Dr. Puentes and promptly made an appointment. I explained to him my situation and we had a conversation on how to approach my demons. He reached deep into the genesis of what caused such mental dispositions. I had no idea until seeing him how closely related my mental issues were to my childhood and other far gone periods of my life. He made diagrams that I could understand to illustrate my triggers and make things easy to comprehend.

Fast forward years later, and I am now equipped with many tools to combat my anxiety as it relates to competition (or lack thereof). In reality, I used Dr. Puentes more as a traditional therapist than a sport's psychologist, but when I was getting close to competitions, he was a huge help in providing me with mental imagery techniques that were tried and true from some of the best mental experts in the world of sports in the country that he has worked alongside that largely contributed to my success in competition. After every session we had, I had many lessons to take home to improve upon where I left off and always left feeling better than I did when I arrived.

I can't say enough about Dr. Puentes. He is a former high level athlete himself in multiple sports and has worked alongside world renown professionals to be where he is today. He is sensitive to all types of situations and will lend an ear where it is very much so needed with the right approach to combat the deepest mental issues that I have ever had. Dr. Puentes is someone that changed my life for the better and provided me with tools that I will use for the rest of my life.
