This review is in regards to substitute teaching through SCOE and for those considering substitute teaching through this organization: I strongly recommend against it, unless you enjoy being treated unprofessionally at all levels. And I'm not talking about from the students.
The staff and administration...even the Human Resources staff frequently will cancel assignments that have been scheduled weeks in advance...at the VERY LAST MOMENT. They will frequently not reach out to let you know they are cancelling, and I have had a job cancelled an hour before the start time, after I had already left the house and arrived at the school to be told that they didn't need me. I had another job cancelled and the HR director told me that another job would probably pop up in it's place (it didn't) and I was stuck without work that I had been counting on. There is no 24 hour notice of cancellation like a decent human being deserves. Other substitute organizations like Swing Education give 24 hour notice or they must pay you for the day. Instead, we receive sub-human treatment and seem to be not worth this grace. I have already tried reaching out to the coordinator at SCOE about this issue of last minute job cancellations, but have not received a response in over a month.
I love the flexibility of subbing, but without any sort of security that a job will exist when it is scheduled, I sadly will have to leave. I am a grad student and it is a great job to do to pair with being in school. It's a shame that they treat us with such disrespect, and I hope that this review might turn the tide on this in some small way.
