I have known Nancy Gordon, LCSW at TBC for CBT as a colleague for about 3 years through participation in a weekly supervision and consultation group with her. Nancy truly has exceptional knowledge, experience, and skills in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She always gives time and attention to colleagues and clients who need support. She possesses an unparalleled level of compassion and understanding for clients who experience some of the deepest anguish in their emotional challenges. She hand-selects and trains her therapists to practice in this same manner. For these reasons, I refer clients to TBC for CBT often. I genuinely look up to Nancy (and her therapists and practice), and I'm very grateful to have learned so much from her over the years.

The professionals at the Tampa Bay Center for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy work hard to provide dialectical behavioral therapy services to the community. Their office is warm and comfortable and they do things by the book. I appreciate them very much!

I HIGHLY recommend steering clear of the Tampa Bay Center for CBT. This is a long review, but I needed to include details to avoid someone else going through this. They specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy. We discovered our son has BPD and the treatment is DBT or CBT. He is over 18 so he signed permission for them to speak to us about his progress. We were not asking for details about personal things, just to be updated on his progress. From the start, they would not tell us anything about his “progress”. Over a 6 month period, I expressed concerns many times to his therapist, Hollis, and his supervisor, Christine, but was met with the same assurances and not offered any details on progress. I explained to them that every aspect of his life was in turmoil and we were concerned he was headed toward a crisis. During his treatment, he failed out of school, had tumultuous relationships, and isolated from his family constantly. He was reckless and impulsive in many areas of his life. My concerns were ignored. He lied a few times about the group therapy class being cancelled because he didn’t want to go. We still had to pay for this, so I told the staff that he would not be doing the final module.
We requested a meeting with Hollis and Christine to discuss progress. At the meeting, we tried to voice our concerns and were shut down and told we just need to support him and that he is doing so well, he didn’t need therapy. We thought they would have suggested at least continuing therapy, but we were shocked when they said he doesn’t need any further treatment due to the progress he had made. They were basing their decision on the checklists they use to ask clients about anxiety symptoms, even though our son is known to compulsively lie (very common with BPD). Our son had told us that he could easily get his therapist to do whatever he wants. His words were, “Hollis is my b!@ch and he does whatever I say”. This is frightening that a therapist could allow himself to be so easily manipulated by a client. It seems that is exactly what happened here. We expected that a place that specializes in this would take into consideration the lying before making any recommendations.
A few days later, I placed another call to the supervisor, Christine, to voice my concerns again. I told her that I am aware that you cannot make someone get help. Knowing the lying/ manipulating that goes on BPD, they should consider the family’s points of view when making recommendations to discontinue treatment. Christine did not seem to care and even said, “Well, what would you have me do?” when I told her they fortified my son’s distorted view of himself and agreed with him that he is doing great. So now our hope of him ever seeking help is gone. I definitely did not feel my concerns were heard or taken seriously.
They will gladly bill you and assure you your loved one is participating and making progress while they charge you every week. You are required to commit to 6 weeks at a time of group therapy and you will be charged, whether they show up (and participate) or not. I was concerned about my son lying and not attending (which showed that he obviously wasn’t ready for this) and they still said the treatment is helping him. They say that it is important for the family to be involved for success in the program, but they have no interest in what the family actually observes and don’t want the family’s actual involvement.
As any family member of someone with BPD knows, this disorder is a nightmare to deal with, and, sadly, after 6 months of “treatment”, we are feeling even more hopeless and scared for our son, and us, than we were before. He has resorted to not having any talks with us anymore, about anything. If we even try, he shuts down and walks away. I have to wonder if this was a “skill” they taught him there. This place has done nothing but alienate him even more from his family. His life is in shambles right now. They did more damage than good to our family. Please, seriously consider this review before trusting them with your loved one.
